  1. I bought this for my mom and she loves it. She’s “low tech” but says this was easy to learn and use. Rating: 4 / 5

  3. While this diamond tester isn’t “point & click”, it’s pretty darn close. It has two modes, an automatic and manual mode. The instructions are clear for what each mode is for and what adjustments are necessary for each.

If you can estimate the ambient temperature to within 25 degrees, and the size of the stone within .25 karat, you should be able to master the manual mode rather easily. The only difficulty I had was calibrating the manual mode start value to anything less than 4, which is required for some settings. However, overall, I don’t think you need to be very exact with the start value number.

After some practice, its really easy to tell diamonds, from CZ, from other semi-precious stones. You’ll get the feel for how quickly the stone “climbs the scale” and should even be able to tell the difference between a diamond and white sapphire.

In order to test a piece, your fingers must come in contact with a metal space on the back of the unit, while you hold the ring or whatever with your other hand. For very small stones it can be a little awkward, and you have to have a steady hand. If you touch metal, it’s ok, it lets you know.

All in all, this tester seems to be good quality and very handy. It may just save you a fortune at your next antique store visit.
